i want to send lots of christmas greetings cards this year.
i especially want to send a card to dozens of posters from this site.
i suppose the obvious answer is that folks email me with an address.
Mommie LOVes Christmad cards but unfortunately there is no room in this year's budget for it.
Is it impolite to sign up to get cards when I know I won't be sending any?
even after a bit of time has gone by - do lyrics to "kingdom melodies" still drift in anyone's head?.
it is over 6 years now -- yesterday and even still now - for whatever reason the song with the lyrics "the way of the truth is the best way of living" -- just that line kept going through my head!
it's driving me crazy!.
OK I know I've told this story before but it still cracks me up:
I knew a JW family that had a talking parrot. When they had the book study at their house the mom would take the cage into a back bedroom and cover it. One night after book study the kids were showing me the bird and they told me it sang "We're Jehovah's Witnesses". So I asked if they could get it to sing.
Mom said 'no, he's lost his zeal for Jehovah'. Finally, when pressed, she admitted that the bird had dropped a few syllables, and now would only sing 'We're Jehovah's Witnesses, we speak out in fear.'
Didn't know peanutbrained birds could be so smart did you?
how many of you still believe in god after your experience of the watchtower?
do you believe in a different god than the one of the org.
one who won't destroy somebody just because he wasn't in the good religion.
The Devil to God, from "Faust" by Randy Newman:
"all of the faith and prayer in the world,
all of your dumb show and circuses,
You know it's a lie,
it'll always be a lie,
the invention of an animal
who knows he's going to die.
Some fools in the desert
with nothing else to do
so scared of the dark they didn't know
if they were coming or going---
so they invented me,
and they invented You
and other fools keep it all going
and growing..."
I belive God exists in the hearts and minds of those too frightened of life's randomness to face it without a buffer.
it's a funny ol' world.
a month ago i was mucking about with some thick fencing wire and i suddenly got the idea to bend a couple of pieces into a set of divining rods like i've seen old nutters doing on tv.
so i cut two sections of wire about 2' long and bent the ends 4" at 90 degrees to form old fashioned diving rods (twitching sticks are made of yew or hickory or something .. don't know what, if anything aboriginies used).
I remember watching a PBS science program that featured a professor and his whole class trying the metal rods method of divining. He was trying to prove the whole notion was hogwash and ended up believing there was something to it after all. He figures it has something to do with magnetism or some other energy; at any rate the whole class had consistent results. They had some teaching assistant bury metal at various locations and neither the prof nor the students knew where on campus they were. Then they divvied up the grounds among them and spread out with rods. The results were good enough to get the guy a grant to do further research.
Can't remember if this was Nova or Scientific American; anyway the upshot was, the metal-finding aspect of divining seems to be way more consistent than waterwitching. The water diviners on the program had more mixed results.
My grandfather was a water witch, he used a hazel branch and family rumor mill had it that he was pretty reliable in his day. I've never had a whack at it but would certainly give it a try before dismissing it out of hand.
here's the chance to finally find out what we suspected all along:.
are you evil?

i'm visiting my son and his wife for a week while on vacation.
for the past few evenings, after we retire to our various sleeping quarters, i've been reading an old copy of analog magazine which i found on his extensive bookshelf (their library fills two walls from floor to ceiling).
analog is, or was, anyway (this issue is dated november 1975) a science fiction/science fact magazine and served mainly to provide genre afficionados the latest offerings from both sci-fi luminaries and young up-and-comers.
Oh WOW COMF Zelazny is one of my minor heroes of SF. If you want to be totally blown away, find a copy of his novella 'A Rose For Ecclesiastes". It's jampacked with memorable bits, and the subject is iconoclasm.
Finding the propinquity of you quoting Roger Z just too gorgeous,
MD
PS my copy of "Rose" is in The Arbor House Treasury of Modern SF if you want to try interlibrary loan
the parents accused of beating their 12-year-old daughter to death have told police they were meting out the biblical punishment of "40 lashes minus one, three times," detectives said monday.
constance slack, a registered nurse at a children's hospital, gagged her daughter, laree, while she was strapped down to a futon, police said.
her father, larry slack, then repeatedly hit the child with an inch-thick section of rubberized electrical cable filled with strands of wire, police said.
I hope JR Brown's tongue rots right out of his smeggin head for telling such a HUGE heinous LIE about JWs and corporal punishment!
How does that asshole sleep at night defending and lying for this rotten cult?
i just read the tragic story of the man in chicago who beat his daughter to death.
i have read stories here and on silentlambs about sexual abuse.. my question is: how much fault can be placed on the religion and how much on the perversions of a particular individual?
i frankly don't know the answer to this question.
People are ultimately responsible for their actions. However, rigidly authoritarian religions (and other organizations) tend to attract the sort of people who abuse power. Powermongering attracts powermongers. 'Pecking order' is basic animal nature. Ever seen a flock of chickens in action? Wolfpack? Ape family? Ever seen animal herds in drought or other times of stress? When unnatural stresses are applied, animals will sometimes tear each other, including their offspring, to bits. Ultimately, who suffers worst? The littluns.
Watchtower=perversely unnatural stress. Hippo hierarchy in bad times. It's no wonder that some unstable types revert to the basest dog-eat-dog behavior when there is no appropriate outlet for the stress. Pressure exerted from the top down, combined with the constant reinforcement of guilt and feelings of inadequacy, can make a nutjob become a dangerous nutjob. Who is the prime victim of that nutjob? The lowliest and most defenseless available hippo downstream.
well guys and gals, i had to get a (routine) pelvic culture a week ago.. they test for beta strep bacteria when you're 37 weeks.. i tested positive, no big deal.. they put me on ampicillin and told me i have to have an iv antibiotic at the hospital.. guess what the ampicillin gave me?.
yup.. lisa.
disgusted class
Lisa I feel for you hon! This happened to me with my second child, and he was born with thrush as a result. The sweet old family doc went with the oldtime remedy, gentian violet, and as a result the poor little squareheaded tyke had a purple mouth and Mommie soon had bright purple nipples too!
Acidophilus helps keep you from getting the yeasty things but I don't know if eating it will help now.. couldn't hurt tho while taking the antibiotic to eat yogurt or drink acidophilus milk anyway. Good calcium for the bebe anyhow...
